About C. Heath Johnson
Heath Johnson started out catching sharks when he was five years old and soon developed a fear of heights. To overcome this phobia, he grew his hair long, left his bed unmade, and brought the first of many motorcycles to life as he toured the U.S. in search of answers to the mystery of what he was supposed to be when he grew up. Along the way, he wrote a few stories.
Born in Evanston, Illinois, he has lived in Baltimore, New Jersey, Tennessee and, through no fault of his own, Texas. He attended Boston University but took a degree in English education from the University of Tennessee. Besides teaching America’s youth in the broken and antiquated system that continues to ignore a global worldview, he has worked a variety of odd jobs including hauling mobile homes, working as a bricklayer's helper, shuttling food and dishes as a busboy and waiter, driven drunken brides and prom queens as a limousine chauffeur, changed dressings and tubes as a hospital orderly, shipped oil field equipment as a warehouse clerk, protected the public as a police dispatcher, ripped and glued lumber as a professional scenery carpenter at the Alley Theater in Houston, swooped and scooped as an Emergency Medical Technician, sold first editions/first printings books as an online dealer, broadened his cultural awareness for ten years as a performer with the Houston Grand Opera, lost money and learned not to trust business partners flipping houses and, as a landlord, learned not to trust renters either. He also wrote features and restaurant reviews for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram for three years. He learned not to put much faith in editors as well- at least, not newspaper editors. They tend to be dull-witted, flexible as concrete, and ill-mannered. These days, for fun and profit, he works the night shift part-time for FedEx in Pflugerville, Texas.
His interests are wide and varied, but if you were to suggest reading a good book, riding for several hours in a bicycle rally, hiking a trail or going up a mountain, traveling overseas (especially to Asia), riding a motorcycle, going out to eat or to the movies, or having a quiet soul-searching all night conversation by candlelight, you would have very contented company indeed. He's not a partier, and in his world, music, memories and words are All. His stories reflect this. He also writes a very sporadic but nonetheless engaging and introspective blog called “Pouring Music From a Cup” at https://cheathjohnson.blogspot.com/
He has two sons, one who is a graduate of the University of Texas in Austin and George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and now lives, works, and makes his girlfriend swoon in Austin. His older brother is an officer in the United States Army, having returned from deployment in Iraq in April of 2024 and then completing his graduate studies at Texas A&M University in the fall of 2024. He now works for the State of Texas while at the same time continuing his duties as Commanding Officer of his Field Artillery battery.
